Uncle Brian

Understanding my feelings at this moment
Now is when I start to grasp the feeling of what this
Could feel like, this new member to the family, the newest
Love of our lives. What an amazing feeling this is to
Everyone around us. Here is the newest
The newest Bolek - my awesome (yet to be named) nephew

Bolek to the world, probably not
Ready for the craziness of the family, but
I know that this child will be brought into
A world of immense love. The Boleks and Zipsies
Now have a true bloodline. Brought to us from Jeff & Amber's love.

I still can't process what this title means. I cried the moment I read the text around the 1am mark of today  from my sister that said that we would be the proud uncle/aunt of our brother and sister-in-law's baby very shortly. (welcome to 2013 as far as news alerts go!)

And yes, I squeezed one last workout in before the news was official, as I had to see if I broke the 200 pound barrier as part of my goal to reach 199.9 or lower by the time I became an uncle (I didn't - but that's ok). I will break that 200 barrier when he is a few weeks old. Never mind that - I'm an uncle!

For a man who usually has a thousand words to say on a subject, being an uncle has made me speechless. It's truly a humbling experience that makes me smile from ear to ear. Just to say the words Uncle Brian have to pale in comparison to what Jeff and Amber are thinking as they process the days ahead where they will be called "Dad" and "Mom" (or some baby offshoot of that) in about a year or so.

I can't wait to have a beer (or if he's like my brother, a Squirt) with him and watch football with him (or if he's like my brother, watch him run around like a spaz).

I can't wait to teach him on why the Niners will cover the 6.5 point spread this week.

But most importantly, I can't wait to see the little guy grow up.

Congrats to my brother and his lovely wife on their new baby boy. The boy has broken the streak of girls being born on my mom's side of the family. The last boy born? My brother almost 28 years ago, of course. Since then, from my sister to my youngest cousin, there were six girls born in a row (a span of almost 24 years).

I can't wait to see this little bundle of joy later today.

Uncle Brian. Awesome.

Back to My Writing Roots

Suddenly feeling a creative writing buzz coming about.

This may be something I delete in time, depending on how it looks to me in a day/week/month, but here goes nothing.

I promise I'm not drunk, just inspired to write.

My Fuel

Like the best detective educating the sleuth,
It always helps to hear the truth.
No matter how hard it is to take,
It's only as bad as you want to make it.

Living in a world of fiction
Creates a state of confusion and friction.
They say the truth will set you free
But many worry about at what cost it will be.

Save me the sugar coat, I'm not hungry nor cold.
I'll sail on another boat. Gonna take this poker hand and fold it
Into the muck. Ran out of luck.
Like a Big Wheel facing a Monster Truck.

You thought I might find another word to rhyme in those above lines there.
The truth is, I just don't care.
Right now, I'm empowered by my sharpest tool-
The gift of word - my energy, my fuel.

When in Poem...

Random writing, 5-17-11:

Numb Hairs

I’m a numbers guy,
I hate zero, but don’t ask me why.
If you take the time to add it up,
You will have no time for the half-empty cup.

One time, I want to be the rhyme
That turns the nickel into a dime,
That turns the lemon into a lime,
That makes the innocent commit a crime.

Two jacks give you a pair
But all you’re left to do is stare
When three kings growl like a bear
And crush your hand without a care.

Three is the magic number
When it’s you and her and her.
It’s something that you wanted, that’s for sure
It’s what you deserve after all you’ve endured.

Time to go forth and make the best of this
You asked for a hug and you got a kiss
Before you make this something you dismiss,
Realize everything you are going to miss.

I plead the fifth when it comes to the court of life
I’m guilty of nothing but wanting this to thrive
I jump into the pool with a perfect dive
If that’s a crime, give me 25 to life.

Six numbers in, I wonder when I will begin
To make sense of these words to my next of kin.
These verses show where I’m going and where I’ve been.
Regret in this world is the biggest of sins.

Keep your eyes open like 7-11,
Whether or not you believe in heaven.
Keep those feet movin’ and those engines revvin’,
For all you take from life, reciprocate with some givin’.

If you eat, you ate; if you’re now, you’re late; after seven, you’re eight.
Set this on your calendars so you don’t miss the date.
You’re fishing alone, they say you have master bait.
If you swim among the hungry sharks, you’ve decided your fate.

Nine planets, but being on this Earth, we never planned it.
Amongst these words of clutter and bullshit,
There’s a message that’s so lawful, it is writ.
As basic and as useful as a first-aid kit.

I won’t command you to give me these minutes of your life—ten,
I just wanted to see how you have been.
Just make the most of this time, live like Barbie and Ken.
Do it now, cause if not now, when?
